Position Summary

Anticipated Openings

Program Highlights for Students: Employment as a paid student researcher for the summer, pending funding of all projects; Potential to earn college-credits for research experience; Opportunity to be a researcher in a student-faculty collaborative research team; Gain research experience that is invaluable for future employment in industry and for entry into graduate and professional school programs; Weekly lunches and social events for students to interact with other student-researchers and faculty members; Present research at an informal symposium; Seminars on topics such as career development, science ethics, and graduate school.


The program is open to undergraduate students. A limited number of openings are available for selected high school students and incoming first-year students at Monmouth University. Priority acceptance is given to Monmouth University students.

Most faculty research mentors who will work with high school students will be accepting rising seniors only.

PLEASE NOTE: Applications for the Summer Research Program are reviewed on a competitive basis. For the 2017 program, approximately 32% of applicants were accepted to participate.

Research Projects

School of Science Summer Research Program participants will have the opportunity to carry out exciting original research in the following areas:

Biology — cell biology, cancer biology, molecular biology, ecology, entomology, marine and environmental biology, reproductive biology, and microbiology.

Chemistry and Physics — bio-organic chemistry, green synthetic chemistry, environmental analytical chemistry, nanotechnology and drug delivery.

Computer Science — computer networks, databases, cyber-security, artificial intelligence, programming.

Mathematics — statistical applications of mathematics.

Software Engineering — design, development, and deployment of software systems.

Urban Coast Institute — watershed management, coastal ecosystems, coastal law and policy, and other areas.

Student laboratory assistants will work under faculty supervision on original research projects in wet laboratory, field environments or computer laboratory settings and will work in small groups to assist other students in the laboratory.
