Position Summary

The Vice President for External Affairs serves as the University’s Chief Institutional Advancement Officer and a key member of the President’s Cabinet. This position reports directly to the President, and provides leadership in planning, developing, implementing, and assessing comprehensive initiatives and activities related to fundraising, alumni relations and public relations.

The Vice President for External Affairs has primary responsibility of leadership for the division which includes, but is not limited to, responsibility for annual fund, major gifts and gift planning, stewardship, corporate and foundation relations, capital campaigns and alumni and community relations. He/she will work closely with the President, Board of Trustees, Provost, Deans and other academic and administrative leaders to set strategic direction and planning for all fundraising, alumni and public relations activities.

Other Requirements

Seven years or more of successful progressive experience, preferably in higher education, primarily in development with extensive knowledge of communications, public relations strategies and alumni relations programs.

Demonstrated commitment to, and understanding of, higher education.

Focused leadership that encompasses both a strategic vision and detailed organizational attention. Experience in recruiting, training, motivating, and managing a successful, comprehensive, and diverse professional staff, including high-level volunteers in areas such as development and communications. Extensive fundraising experience in areas which may include capital campaigns, major gifts, annual fund, alumni campaigns, planned giving, donor recognition, corporations and foundations, stewardship, Arts and Division I Athletics. Demonstrated success in closing five, six and seven figure gifts.

Demonstrated track record of identifying and leveraging business/vendor partnerships and other revenue-related opportunities beyond traditional fundraising practices.

Preferred Qualifications

Assess and prioritize the allocation of resources within the Division of External Affairs to support the trajectory as articulated in the University strategic plan.

Assist the President in maintaining a university presence among its alumni by creating and implementing a comprehensive alumni relations program.
